WHAT'S HAPPENING - WORKFORCE ?
Work has been
underway across North West London to plan for the future workforce
requirements within cardiac care to support delivery of local and
national priorities.
Cardiac Physiology was identified as a key
priority and has therefore formed one of the initial areas of focus.
The Workforce Directorate in North West London led a pan London
project to establish future needs, training and recruitment requirements
for this staff group across London.

The London Cardiac Networks are working together
to inform and progress ideas of this report at both a London SHA
and national level.
A scoping exercise,
spanning the entire cardiac workforce across community and acute
care settings, is currently underway. Key objectives of this work
are to identify current and potential future gaps in the workforce
and specific recruitment issues. A report detailing the results
of this scoping exercise is expected during July 2006 and this
will form the basis of a comprehensive Network Workforce Strategy,
which will encompass different workforce strands including manpower
planning, recruitment, new and re-designed job roles and future
education and training needs. To support deveopment of the strategy,
the Network will be organising a 'workforce event' during the autumn
for key stakeholders and professional leads. Once fully developed,
a steering group will be formed to oversee implementation of the
Network's Workforce Strategy. |
WHAT'S HAPPENING - EDUCATION ?
1 Post-graduate
Certificate in Cardiovascular Medicine - In April 2006, the Network
launched a sector wide educational programme aimed at General Practitioners
and Specialist Cardiac Community Nurses. This course has been developed
in collaboration with Thames Valley University, Harrow PCT and Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (St Mary's Hospital).
Enthusiasm for the course has been high from amongst primary
care practitioners and the Network has therefore organised
additional courses during.
2 Generic Catheter Lab Practitioner -
Three Trusts: Royal Brompton and Harefield, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust (St Mary's) and Guy's and St
Thomas', in partnership with London South Bank University, have developed
a one year Master's Level Course in elective angiography.
The aim of the
course is to create a new role of the Generic Catheter Lab Practitioner
by extending the roles of cardiac physiologists, radiographers and nurses
to reduce cardiac catheter laboratory downtime and the resulting patient
delays.
Having commenced in April 2005, the first course included students
from nine different NHS Trusts, successfully concluding in April 2006.
Formal evaluation of the course commenced in March 2006 and is due to
finish in August 2006. Feedback received to date has been very positive
and it is therefore intended to run a second course during the autumn.
The Network has submitted a business case for the pan London commissioning
of the course to the London Education Commissioners.
